why is a clock on your wrist or in your pocket called a 'watch'?

anyone ever wondered this?
always keeping 'watch' of the time? is clock an old term for the verb 'to watch'?
"Sorry I'm late."
"That's okay. Time doesn't exist."

that's a good question, it's quite the same word in french ^^
a watch is a "montre" and it's the word we use to say "show (me something)" 
maybe a clock is just an onomatopoeia ?
